The Issue

We, as peacebuilding professionals, organizations, and concerned European citizens, urgently call on the EU institutions and member states to advocate for immediate de-escalation and an end to the violence in the Gaza Strip, Israel, and the West Bank. Immediate action is critical.

We strongly condemn the attacks by Hamas, which have resulted in the loss of numerous Israeli civilian lives, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and the hostages, hoping for their safe return.

Simultaneously, we condemn the full-scale military intervention by Israel. The operations have led to a significant loss of civilian life and exacerbated a humanitarian crisis through the blocking of aid, risking thousands of lives and failing to achieve its stated objectives. These actions have not only failed to secure the release of hostages but have potentially strengthened hostile entities in the region, thereby undermining both Israel's security and regional stability. Some EU member states have supported these operations without sufficient public debate or accountability.

As advocates for peace and human rights, we must stand up for international law and take immediate action to provide humanitarian aid and de-escalate tensions.

More specifically, we are urgently calling on all the EU member states to:

- Halt the export of arms to all conflict parties.

- Employ all diplomatic and economic tools at our disposal to secure a lasting ceasefire,

ensure full humanitarian access in Gaza, and the safe release of all hostages.

- Condemn the violence in Gaza strongly and advocate for lifting the blockade of Gaza.

- Demand that all parties adhere strictly to international humanitarian and human rights standards, and implement orders from the International Court of Justice immediately.

- Develop a comprehensive peace strategy that ensures the security of both a Palestinian state and Israel, to prevent future violence escalation.

- Support and facilitate people-to-people encounters that offer psychological and trauma support for affected civilians.

We call for the EU to utilize its full range of good services to influence effectively to prevent further escalation and promote lasting peace in the region.
