Appeal to Fraternity and Sorority Life Office Change

The Issue

Hello Everyone! We were informed today that SUNY Plattsburgh intends to evict fraternity/sorority life from our current office spaces. These spaces include the primary office, lounge, and conference room. Instead, they intend to push us into the old radio station in Burghy's den as our new headquarters. Upon a joint meeting with ISA/IFC, we have collectively agreed that this would have massive negative implications for our community:

  • Fraternity/Sorority life has gradually been declining. A smaller office stowed away means smaller influence and room for growth (Lower accessibility: members are less likely to talk to staff)
  • Smaller room for Project HELP, fraternity/sorority life, chapter meetings combined. All of which work cohesively during office hours for the fraternity/sorority community
  • Fraternities and Sororities utilize the Conference room for organizational meetings regarding important chapter information daily.
  • Fraternity/sorority mural wall/flags wouldn't serve its purpose as a standing monument for our fraternity and sorority life community with it next to a different division.
  • Fraternity/sorority members are comfortable with the space where it is.
  • Non-Fraternity/Sorority members come to the office seeking volunteer opportunities.
  • With the lounge, we are able to hold committee training and president’s training
  • Allison accessibility next to everyone in the office (lower collaboration and engagement with the seclusion of the new office)
  • Fraternity/sorority volunteers for the community, and fundraises for philanthropies. The office is a supplemental educational resource that classes don't provide us with.
  • We have already seen the school continuously reduce our programming budget for students, and now they are attempting to cut us out of our own office.
  • Fraternities and Sororities have molded this campus, feeling like we are losing consecutively more support each year.

Thus, we would prefer to see our fraternity and sorority headquarters on campus to continue at its location for the betterment of our campus. Please sign so we can keep working to make our community better from the office we have always been at!
