The Issue

Our peaceful residential community around Barker Rd. has been our family's haven for years. It was here that our children took their first steps, learned to ride their bikes, and where neighbors came together for block parties and celebrations. However, this refuge is under threat due to the recent rezoning approval by the committee of board commissioners, changing our beloved neighborhood into a commercial zone.

The board's decision to rezone Barker Rd. for commercial purposes disregards the character and needs of our community. Statistics show that introducing commercial properties into residential neighborhoods can lead to an increase in traffic, noise pollution, and a potential decrease in local property values. According to studies conducted in similar neighborhoods, traffic congestion may increase by up to 40%, leading to longer commutes and safety hazards, especially for our children and elderly residents. We already have 3 gas stations within half a mile.

Moreover, the environmental impact is significant.

Rezoning could result in the removal of green spaces that many of us enjoy for recreation and mental well-being. Our neighborhood's charm is its tranquility and natural beauty, and these are irreplaceable assets that contribute to our quality of life. We are also concerned about this attracting the homeless population which would be in our back yard.

However, we have actionable solutions that can support both community interests and economic development. We propose a middle ground to the commissioners: maintain the residential zoning along Barker Rd., while considering alternative locations for commercial development that do not infringe on residential spaces. Possible commercial areas could include vacant lots and underutilized spaces closer to main thoroughfares that are designed to handle the increased traffic.

Moreover, by holding open forums and discussions involving residents, businesses, and urban planning experts, we could find a sustainable and inclusive path forward, making sure that all stakeholders' voices are heard and considered.

We urge you to join us in appealing this rezoning decision. Sign this petition to protect the integrity of our community, ensuring our neighborhood remains a vibrant and peaceful place to live. Together, we can present a unified voice to the courts appealing the decision by the board of commissioners and seek a fair reconsideration of the rezoning approval that aligns with the desires and needs of the current residents.
