Ban the Usage of Plastic Bags at Appalachian State University

Ban the Usage of Plastic Bags at Appalachian State University

The Issue

Appalachian State University prides itself as an institution whose main focus is sustainability. However, the University still uses single use plastics bags at its on-campus markets, bookstore, and dining halls. In the United States over 100 million single use plastic bags are used each year (with hundreds of thousands of these coming from our campus alone). If we want to be a leader in sustainability, Appalachian State should follow in the footsteps of Universities such as Duke, and cities such as Boston and ban the usage of plastic bags on its campus. By banning the usage of plastic bags on campus we will be able to get closer to our goal of becoming carbon neutral and zero waste. This ban will also ensure that the scenery of our campus and surrounding areas stay beautiful. No one wants to see plastic bags on their drive down the parkway. Tell Appalachian State that you care about the beauty and sustainability of our community by telling them you want a ban on plastic bags.
