Apology from Prime Minister Trudeau for refusal to speak English in Sherbrooke, Qc

The Issue

Canada has 2 official Languages and the Government of Canada's policy is to support the Official Minority Language Community in Quebec, yet at a press conference in Sherbrooke on January 17, the Prime Minister refused to answer in English to a question asked in English. It is understood that Quebec's French Charter applies to services and business, but the Charter does not restrain in any way the use of English in communications between citizens and officials. The PM's refusal to speak English is either indicative of a major departure from Government of Canada policy, ignorance of the dictates of the Quebec Charter, or an insensitivity to the concerns of the English Minority Community in Quebec.
