Apologize for offending Christians during the opening of the Olympic Games

The Issue

During the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris a very obvious parody-recreation of the Last Supper was presented. The Last Supper is the key event in Christianity, one of the most important symbols for millions of people. During the opening ceremony it was turned into a tactless comedy of very questionable taste. It upset and hurt a lot of people all over the world. Regardless of whatever intentions the organizers had, the end result was just insulting and completely reckless.

The above event does not help the cause of the LGBTQIA+ community either, as it presents this community as people with no respect or regard for other beliefs.

We live in times when tolerance and respect for others' beliefs are considered some of the most important values. Mocking any religious group in such a way during public, globally broadcasted events is not only completely unnecessary, but also contradicts everything that the modern society is built upon. A similar parody regarding any other religion would never be considered for such an event - and rightfully so. This is nothing more than a double standard.

We strongly believe that such actions deserve to be condemned and a call for apology is completely justified.

We demand that the International Olympic Committee and the French National Olympic and Sports Committee:

  1. Officially, publicly apologize for the above-mentioned event,
  2. Ensure that no more such offensive incidents occur during the Olympic Games,
  3. Include a form of reflection on religious tolerance, particularly towards Christianity, in the closing ceremony.
