Move the Apex Electrical Operations Facility out of residential neighborhoods.
The Issue
The Town of Apex rezoned land in 2009 to build a future electrical operations facility. Notice was given to the residents living in the area at that time. The capital improvement project was put on hold several years pending funding. In 2018,the first plans were reviewed by the Town of Apex for this site and submitted for approval. In December 2018, the project was approved in the budget. In September 2019, ground breaking occurred and trees have now been cleared. No public notice was given to the neighbors surrounding the site, nor a "Neighborhood Meeting" held as required by the Town of Apex for Major Site Plans. The reason for this - The Town of Apex is exempt!
The location is at the intersection of Milano and Mt Zion Roads between the Bella Casa and Buckhorn Reserve neighborhoods. There are safety concerns putting an industrial operation within a residential area. It is directly across from a neighborhood pool and park that many families walk and bike to. There are multiple bus stops very near the operation, that will now require children to cross an additional intersection and the streets will see more traffic due to the operations - services and deliveries. There are large electrical bucket trucks that will be driving through the residential areas. Deliveries of materials, large electrical supplies and more will also utilize the roads in the neighborhood. This office and industrial facility was approved using public funds, WITHOUT public notice. The Town Management has also mentioned that this facility attracts theft.
In between the time of rezoning (2009) and approving the budget for the facility (2018), the Town Council also approved residential areas to be built up right next to the operation without adequate buffers.
We are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now and stop the construction of the Town of Apex Electric Operations Facility immediately adjacent to the Bella Casa and Buckhorn Reserve neighborhoods and reevaluate this location and move the site. This site in not appropriate in the current residential community!
