DoorDash has quickly become one of the nation’s leading food delivery chains over the years and in return has provided jobs to millions of Americans especially during these trying times of unemployment and Covid ridden fears. But Doordash is not paying it’s delivery people, known as Dashers, a living wage. 

Doordash brought in $11.2 billion last quarter. Yet they are asking employees like me to work for nothing.

As a longtime Dasher, I’ve never received more than $2.50 base pay for an order. This combined with $2-8 in tips for what’s usually 30 minutes in work barely even covers my gas costs. 

Doordash learned that they could take advantage of the general population by giving them essentially a carrot on a stick. As a Dasher I constantly receive emails or notifications claiming that they are raising base pay because it is busy or weather is bad. But when I log in to the app the additional base pay disappears. They will give you small orders for months on end, the average dasher will see orders with a total of $2.50 at least 10 times a shift because they expect us to spend our own money on gas and maintenance with absolutely no return. Then all of a sudden it is a Wednesday morning and you decide to jump on last minute and you get a massive order that’s $25 to go 2 miles up the road and it makes you feel like DoorDash is worth it again and you fall back into the cycle of sorting and picking through $2.50 orders. 

The math doesn’t add up. Doordash is making more money than ever, but it won’t pay workers enough to feed their families.

Doordash needs to stop taking advantage of its Dashers and Merchants alike and increase our base pay and stop hiding and stealing tips. Dashers should not have to download separate apps that will determine how much the tip actually will be because they are hidden in orders that say they are worth $2 and we should not have to count pennies and dimes to pay for gas to deliver people their food.
