For decades, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has had a guiding policy when it comes to radiation exposure - any amount of radiation can cause cancer. That policy has helped countless people receive compensation for radiation exposure and protected Americans from harmful practices and radioactive leaks.

Now that long-held policy is at risk of being gutted. The EPA is moving to deregulate what constitutes dangerous radiation exposure. That means if you live near a superfund site, work in the radiology section of a hospital, or live near a nuclear power-plant - you could end up being exposed to more radiation under this new policy.

Several studies have all confirmed it, there is no safe threshold of radiation exposure. The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements reviewed 29 different health studies on cancer rates for people exposed to low-levels of radiation through: medical treatments, the U.S. bombing of Japan in WWII, and nuclear-site leaks. Twenty of those studies confirmed that cancer rates increased with exposure to even low-levels of radiation.

While the EPA is moving to weaken these policies, U.S. government agencies like the Food and Drug Administration continue to advise the public that even a single CT-scan can increase your risk of having a fatal cancer. Right now, the EPA is moving towards cutting radiation exposure policies through new guidelines, which will include new threshold ranges for exposure to harmful substances. This could make it easier for nuclear power plants and superfund sites to leak waste and radioactive materials without being held accountable. Lives are at stake.
