Communal media coverage of Assam Floods! Demand Stern Action

Dear fellow citizens and supporters,

It’s really depressing to see the way communal hatred continues to grow in our country, making India seem almost unrecognisable at times. Two platforms that mostly fuel the hate are social media and media. We are seeing some rare instances of proactive steps being taken to crackdown on social media online. For example in Nagpur, the police commissioner issued a warning. It read “any citizen creating/forwarding/propagating offensive and provocative messages with an intent to cause communal rift and disturb tranquility shall face stern action.” When will we see such an approach to mute the hate in the news media? Let's demand action by spreading the word.

News anchors and guest speakers continue to have a free hand for uttering some of the foulest comments about religions and communities. A few days ago we were shocked to see a leading news organisation in Delhi trying to blame the Assam floods (an annual natural disaster) on one community. This poison needs to be nipped in the bud.

We are eager to ensure that this petition is discussed in the Parliament, which meets later this month. For that, we need to reach the 50,000-signature milestone. We currently have 38,000 signatures. Help us get to 50,000 this week by sharing the petition with more people

I believe there are more Indians who feel like we do. Let’s ensure this petition reaches all of them.

Thank you,
