The Issue

Antisemitism has no place in British politics.

Jewish people must be afforded the same dignity, protection and right to national self-determination as every other people. Zionism, in its broadest sense, is the belief that Jewish people have a right to national self-determination in their historic homeland. Disagreement with the policies or actions of the Israeli government is entirely legitimate; denying Jewish people rights that are accepted for other peoples is a fundamentally different matter.

We are deeply concerned by attempts within British politics to portray Zionism itself, or the principle of Jewish national self-determination, as inherently racist.

Political parties must be free to debate governments, borders, wars and policies robustly. But that debate must never become a justification for hostility towards Jewish people, collective blame, or discriminatory treatment of Jewish identity and beliefs.

Britain should apply the same standard to antisemitism that it applies to every other form of racism. No political movement should be given a free pass when rhetoric directed at Jewish people would be recognised as unacceptable if directed at another ethnic or religious minority.

We therefore call on Parliament to examine the treatment of Zionism and antisemitism within British political parties, to reaffirm that Jewish people are entitled to equal protection from racism and discrimination, and to ensure that political debate about Israel does not become a vehicle for antisemitic prejudice.

There should be no tolerance for antisemitism in Parliament, in political parties, or anywhere else in British public life.

Please sign this petition and ask Parliament to defend that principle clearly and unequivocally.
