Some Change for Change: Putting Fees for Single Use Plastic Bags

The Issue

Our MISSION is to reduce plastic bag consumption within our community, enlighten people about various environmental concerns, and contribute to environmental groups and movements.

Our VISION is a city with reduced plastic bag consumption, and a community dedicated to protecting the environment.

Plastic waste is seen everywhere right now, as almost all households and individuals produce them daily, from plastic wrappers, plastic bags, and other plastic materials. Most of the time, these plastic wastes are those which are only used once and never recycled. One of the main products which contributes to these are the plastic bags given when purchasing items. With this in mind, we petition to charge fees for each plastic bag used by consumers, with the profits donated to environmental movements.

The project is heavily based on several plastic bag laws enforced in several states of the United States of America.

Our PURPOSE is to instill discipline and responsibility to our fellow citizens, for this can make us more mindful of every plastic bag we use and remember to use more environment-friendly options like eco-bags. We also aim to reduce the overall consumption of plastic bags which are one of the mail contributors to pollution.

PROJECT DETAILS

Plastics are one of the main pollutants of the environment. One example of this is the Manila Bay, where it was heavily polluted by plastic materials, like plastic bags.  Only one to three percent of plastic wastes are put into recycling each year. What's worse is that they don't biodegrade. As you can see, reducing the consumption is the best way to minimize the pollution caused by plastics. This is why it is first on the three R's of the environment.

With this, we took inspiration from several plastic bag laws from the United States of America, where their implementation generated a sizable reduction in plastic bag consumption. Instead from outright banning plastic bags, we suggest to add a charge for every plastic bag used in establishments depending on their size. We propose to charge Php 3.00 for large-sized plastic bags, Php 2.00 for medium-sized ones, and Php 1.00 for small-sized ones. With this, we will be more conscious of every plastic bag we use, since they don't only pollute the environment but also cost you more in the long run. The profits gained from the project can be utilized for environment conservation and protection projects, or donated to organizations that help save the environment.

The project will require the participation of the Local Government of Antipolo City, as well as the establishments and stores located in the said city.

SUPPORT

The SUPPORT of Antipolo City citizens, establishments and businesses, and government is asked for the implementation of this project. Every people's effort, even from the smallest communities, is valuable for its success. Small businesses, such as sari-sari stores, karinderyas, and convenience stores, are also encouraged to participate.
