Make the Grove safer - let's slow down traffic on 32nd Ave!
The Issue
As community members and residents of Coconut Grove, we are concerned about the speed of traffic at the intersection of 32nd Avenue (McDonald) and Day Avenue:
- In the North/South direction of 32nd Avenue, there are motor vehicle crashes that occur on a regular basis that put driver, passenger, and pedestrian lives in danger.
- In the Eastbound direction of Day Avenue near Indiana/Margaret, there is excessive speeding en route to 32nd Avenue that has killed several beloved pets to date. We fear it is only a matter of time before a pedestrian is hit.
On both McDonald Ave and Day Ave, we wish to slow the speed of traffic to make vehicle and pedestrian crossings safe for ourselves, our children, and our pets.
In the past 18 months, as a community we have made multiple attempts to address this issue including:
- Requesting and receiving a traffic study from Joan Shen, Chief of Miami-Dade County Traffic Engineering Division that validates our concerns.
- Requesting and receiving several "enforcement blitzes" through the aid of Coconut Grove Police Commander Manuel Morales that further validates the community's concerns.
- Receiving design approval in September 2015 and a notice to proceed (NPT) in November 2015, from the Miami Capital Improvement Projects Team (CIPT) for a speed table on Day Avenue near Indiana/Margaret, only to receive notice in June 2016 that the project will not proceed due to physical and geometric constrains because of numerous driveways.
- Receiving unofficial communication that a traffic circle has been approved for McDonald Ave and Day Ave.
In this petition, our requests as a community are as follows:
- A meeting with CIPT to discuss traffic mitigation at this intersection and confirm next steps.
- Official documentation re: the approvals of both the speed table and the traffic circle, as well as information on the projects approval process and associated timeframes for completion.
- Alternative traffic mitigation approvals, e.g. a stop sign at Margaret, for the speed table should the physical and geometric requirements not be met for the Day Ave / Indiana Ave intersection due to the preponderance of driveways.
Thank you for your help in making our community a better, safer place. Please contact Liz Lasher (lasher.elizabeth@gmail.com) should you have any questions regarding this petition.
