Dear Petitioner

I hope this email finds you well. Please accept my sincere thanks for your support of the petition to investigate the Third of June massacre in Sudan in 2019. We asked the UN Secretary-General to investigate the massacre of peaceful protesters outside the Khartoum army headquarters on the 3rd of June 2019. Thanks to each and every one of you who signed and shared the petition.

Your commitment and enthusiasm have truly made a significant impact, as more than 800.00 thousand petitioners have signed the petition so far. It appeared in the New York Times and was signed by Rihanna. Sudan has experienced few highs and many lows since then. A high point was the signing of the constitutional document allowing a civilian-military partnership to rule the country for a four-year transitional period.

Provisions in the constitutional document allowed for a formation of a national investigative committee to investigate the massacre. The committee was headed by a prominent Sudanese lawyer who carried out a full investigation. But for unknown reasons the final report was never published and no one was brought to justice for the crimes committed that day. Impunity is the norm in Sudan especially if crimes are committed by the state or by people with influence and power.

Sadly the transition period was hijacked by a military coup, orchestrated by the military partners of the transitional period on 25th October 202. The investigative committee’s functions were hampered and stopped and the perpetrators escaped justice.

A low point for Sudan is that on the 15th of April 2023, fighting broke out in the Sudanese capital Khartoum between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and a paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). It is no coincidence that the two generals that are the main suspects in the June the Third massacre are waging war against each other. One can’t help but think that if they were brought to justice for their previous crime they wouldn’t have started this war, and jeopardized the future of Sudan as one country. Sudanese people are paying a heavy price for historical impunities and this has to stop. We are relaunching the petition and aiming to reach the million signatures mark with your help and support. Please share the petition and encourage others to sign and keep an eye on Sudan.

Yours faithfully Moh Sudan
