We would like express our gratitude for getting to 4200+ signatures. This was possible due to our joint efforts to amplify the issue across social media and in the media. Thanks to exemplary groups like the Coalition Against Sexual Violence (CASV) in Kenya, its member organisations, and other stakeholders in the social justice and human rights space unifying to move fast in taking action against John Chebochok’s election, significant momentum has been achieved.
- Finlay and Liptons have stopped buying tea from the factory
- International organisations like Ethical Trading Initiative, Ethical Tea Partnership and Fairtrade have taken a stand alongside the Coalition and other organisations
- The Kenyan media has extensively covered the issue and published updates from efforts made by lobby groups
We are humbled that this online petition could play a role in supporting these efforts. We applaud the Coalition and organisations that moved to court along with all interested parties and will continue to reach out to provide whatever support we can.
We cannot and must not relent! We must continue working together to keep the spotlight blazing on this issue until change is inevitable. The shareholders of Tegat/Toror Tea Factory will be meeting on Thursday, 18th July, less than a week from now. Our collective voices should echo even louder, chanting the unified message of #ChebokResignNow that we have so widely hummed across social media.
Our efforts should be like a constant drumbeat, resonating until the message is heard and the decision made in that meeting rejects his election!
Please continue to share this across your networks and social media. Let us keep calling to account the authorities who should not have allowed this to happen in the first place.
We recently sent a joint call statement to various stakeholders, including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
With your help, the message will undeniably reach them.
