The Issue

We want to have SGA instate an annual Sexual Assault Prevention Course at FSU for all students and staff and fund women’s protective measures like drink covers.

Join Tallahassee SDS in our ongoing campaign about rape culture on campus. Throughout the course of this campaign we have heard from women who have been failed by the university, the police, and people they have trusted. Stand with our women on campus and demand better! Please stay connected with us and look for updates on public comment at SGA meetings on Instagram @tallysds

Talking Points:

Recently started a petition w/ nearly 100 signatures advocating for exactly these things - during Summer B, the petition will only earn more signatures this semester.
reactive policies like title IX can be helpful but being proactive is also critical
Students should feel safe when they drink. SGA can do something to make every one of them safer - revise the sexual assault course!
Normalizing preventative measures
Pervasiveness of rape culture on college campuses
Every student knows someone that’s experienced sexual assault, and many know someone that experienced it during their time at FSU - SGA can finally address some of that suffering

Annual Sexual Assault Prevention Course:

having a course be annual instead of in a single instance allows students to be continuously more aware of their behavior in sexual situations
Ensure faculty, employees and contractors take the course
Currently the Title IX course is barebones and a one-time requirement for employees
include a section about what consent is and is not (touching on intoxication and the role it plays in consent)
include a section on dating violence, coercion, and harmful societal attitudes
Include a section about power dynamics in relationships and what to look out for
Include a section for how we can support victims after the fact and resources at FSU
Work with CHAW and Green Dot, victim advocacy oriented

We also want:

Drink covers:
Drink spiking is common in social places, specifically in fraternities. Drink covers will provide a way for people to keep themselves safer from potential drink spiking by making it more difficult for someone to contaminate the drinks of others.
SGA already passed legislation about drink test strips, this is the logical next step
