Set "pay what you can" and "pay what you believe is right" dues for graduate students, part-time, full-time nontenurable faculty, and other members who have been under-represented.

Set "pay what you can" and "pay what you believe is right" dues for graduate students, part-time, full-time nontenurable faculty, and other members who have been under-represented.
The Issue
Did you know that MLA director Rosemary Feal has been dismissing criticism about MLA dues and convention expenses by claiming that the dues structure is effectively “pay what you want”? That’s not really true, since what she means is that MLA staff don’t investigate your claims about income or enrollment status. We agree that many categories of faculty (graduate students, part-timers, nontenurable, low-income) should have a “pay what you can” option. Though we don’t think you should have to lie–and feel guilty or dishonorable–to do it.
ANNOUNCING THE $23.01 CAMPAIGN
We at #mlademocracy want Feal to make good on her claims, and work to change the dues structure to a “pay what you can” system for the majority of faculty, or anyone who feels under-represented by the organization. In the meanwhile, we’re taking Feal at her word, and paying “what we want” until the structure is truly “pay what you can” for the most exploited among us.
To join the $23.01 campaign, renew your dues for the lowest dues band you can, which is the $23 charge for graduate students or the $28 lowest income band, whichever you feel most comfortable with. Then donate one penny to one of the charitable funds for which MLA collects, for a total membership or renewal of $23.01 or $28.01. Let the MLA leadership know that it needs to develop a more inclusive and responsive MLA.
If you believe in this principle, sign below. You can add impact to your signature by joining/renewing by paying $23.01 or $28.01. Let us and your friends know by posting or tweeting using the hashtag #2301.
