On Monday, June 29, 6:30pm, we will be going back to Hendon Town Hall with members of Our West Hendon, Barnet Housing Action, Dollis Valley estate residents and others concerned with housing in the borough. Our visit coincides with Barnet Council Housing Committee’s monthly meeting, but we won’t be trying to get inside the meeting this time round. Having been locked out of many council meetings and councillor surgeries before, we are having our own meeting – on the front lawn of the town hall. Rather than appealing to a Council that has failed abjectly in its housing duties, we will be coming together to figure out what we, the residents of Barnet, can do to take, make and protect the housing we need in the borough. We want to show Barnet Council – and one another – what a truly people-powered housing agenda can look like. Can you join us and help make it happen? The family were given six weeks to leave Sweets Way, though the judge told Barnet Council they had a clear and urgent responsibility to find housing for the family that is suitable given Mostafa’s disabilities. Their fight is far from over though. Read more about Mostafa’s court date here: https://sweetswayresists.wordpress.com/2015/06/23/the-struggle-continues/ JENNIFER: RE: Jennifer, the Sweets Way mum and domestic violence survivor, who Barnet discharged their duties to. This week she and her boys moved into a lovely new-build housing association flat, which they are thrilled with. However, the new home was no thanks to Barnet Council, who continued to fail Jennifer at every turn. What eventually found Jennifer a home was the good will of Councillor Alison Cornelius, who went out of her way to find Jennifer a place to live. Unfortunately though, all the good will in the world won’t address the systemic issues that led to Jennifer being left in such a scary and precarious situation. We are incredibly appreciative! It is all of your support that keeps us going!
