Why this petition matters
Started by Lorelei Tuxworth
In the state of Queensland, transgender individuals are required to undergo invasive sexual reassignment surgery before they can legally change the gender on their birth certificate.
Every state and territory (with the exception of Queensland and New South Wales) has removed this requirement, as it merely serves as a pointless obstacle to transgender people who are unable or unwilling to have the surgery.
Transgender people should not be required to undergo this invasive surgery, and the Queensland government should, as many governments before it have, ditch this unnecessary and inhumane requirement and allow transgender people to have their gender legally recognised without the need for surgery.
