Our children in the state of Oregon have not had a normal school year in almost 2 years. Now that school is back in session many children are now being faced with returning to school under the state's requirement of wearing a mask. I have two children, one is attending Boring middle school and the other is attending Kelso elementary school. Both of my kids have expressed their lack of excitement towards the state's requirement of having to wear a mask at school. Masking our children is not normal and should not be normalized to our youth. My son has voiced his opinion of being forced to wear a mask at school and he does not agree with it. He has been called out multiple times over and over for not having his mask over his nose, he has had to write on a full sheet of paper "I will wear my mask correctly every day" over and over until the paper was filled, all this for not having his mask over his nose, he is tired of the masks and so are we as a family. The only problem is he is not learning from his disobedient actions at school and he will lose if he continues to do that. I am doing this to show my son that by standing up for our beliefs and creating a movement for something that our neighbors and surrounding communities can agree with is how we can make changes in our hometowns. We hope this will become fruitful in time and with the help of the communities surrounding us I know it will make a huge impact on our children's future in school. Our voices are stronger in numbers! That is where this petition comes into play, I want this to be a family affair, get your kids involved with this, have them read it and see if they agree or disagree, show them that we as parents are going to stand up for them. I know we all understand the state-mandated REQUIREMENTS that have been put in place by the higher authorities in Oregon. This is not an anti-movement at all but a pro-choice movement for our children that are currently attending K-12 schools. I am proposing the state change the REQUIRED mask mandate, to a RECOMMENDED mandate, giving parents the choice to have their children wear a mask or not while attending K-12 schools. I understand that this may not happen this year, I would consider this a win if this takes effect for our kid's 22-23 school year and all the remaining years following. The only place that any of the children in my community wear a mask is at school. I believe that parents should have the power to decide what is best for their children, whether it is in our home, or at our schools. Our family's health is something that we hold dear to our heart's and we would never put our children in harm's way. Our schools should do what they do best, teach. I know my children will be happier attending school like they always have without wearing a mask. They will be able to see their teacher's lips and mouths move as they talk, they will be able to smile at each other once again. Our kids deserve to have the same opportunity to thrive in our schools as we did as kids. Help me put an end to the REQUIREMENTS and make the change to allowing the state to only RECOMMEND masks.
