Keeping NAU safe for its commuters

Keeping NAU safe for its commuters
The Issue
Northern Arizona University is in a region that occasionally receives a large snow storm that impacts students ability to SAFELY get to class. While I understand that giving 25,000+ students their fair chance at getting an education, I also believe that their safety is of upmost importance.
- 63% of students live off campus
- FUSD schools cancel school for the safety of the children attending, even when they live closer to the campuses in relation to a majority of NAU students.
- NAU states, "Safety is a top priority at Northern Arizona University." However, they continue to allow students to endanger themselves and others when major snow storms hit the Flagstaff region.
- Just because NAU streets are clear, doesn't mean that the streets of Flagstaff are clear. Remember 63% of students live off campus.
I urge you to sign this petition not because you want to skip class, but because you truly want to be safe and allow yourself the best opportunity to get an education while staying safe. If NAU makes its safety a priority, then it should cancel school when FUSD cancels its schools.
"When the NAU President or his/her designee declares that classes are cancelled, students who are enrolled in and faculty who teach classes that have been cancelled shall be relieved of classes for the period of time specified by the President or designee." -NAU's class cancel policy
Rita Cheng or her designee are those who can decide whether the school is going to close or not. I believe it should be decision made by more than one person as NAU is a diverse school with many people who currently are risking their health just so they don't miss class.
