The mental and physical health of our precious children is a growing cause for concern. Modern PE and PSHE is not working. Our children are adrift and we need to provide an anchor. We need to turn to a system that is 5,000 years old and is proven to work - yoga.
Yoga breathing focuses the mind on the present, removing anxiety and worry about the past and the future.
Yoga postures work deeply from the inside out, optimising the function of cells, glands, muscles, tissues, hormones, etc, and bringing the body back into balance.
Yoga needs to be practised regularly, and the only way children are going to be able to do this is in school. Setting aside two minutes for quiet breathing several times during the school day and 20-30 minutes for yoga postures 3-5 times a week is going to create calm, kind, strong, focused and disciplined children.
Yoga practitioners believe that we have all the answers inside of us; we just have to find time to stop and listen to our intuition. The regular practice of yoga will remove doubt and fear from children's minds, help them to like themselves, develop self-esteem and thereby withstand bullying of any kind. They will intuitively learn to set healthy boundaries for themselves and learn to say no to things that will disrupt their peace and balance.
Yoga and meditation are coming to schools but not fast enough or in the right way. There should be a structured programme, like the PE of old, and it needs to be mandatory. Only then will it be successful and transform young lives.
