Animal rights in Cyprus

Animal rights in Cyprus

The Issue

Generally across the island of Cyprus there are a large number of stray dogs and cats. Particularly in The North Cyprus region there are maltreatment of hunting dogs that are being kept in dirty cages without much food or water. They are beaten, sick and receiving no medical attention. They are constantly being bred without any ethical or moral concerns for the well being of the animals. Animal cruelty and mistreatment mostly impacts dogs as they can turn violent when constantly abused- as its every creatures right to self defend. It can also be a problem as packs of dogs attack dogs with owners and it’s heartbreaking to have to be mean to the stray dogs to protect your own dog. the government does nothing to protect or help these animals. No laws are enforced for animal cruelty and funds are not issued to charities that are doing the work voluntarily. There is no awareness being spread across the country about abandoning dogs to streets or violence towards their own pets and stray animals. Locals poison strays. The situation across the country is desperate and needs government interference urgently. It must be a considerable effort in order to begin to make a difference in the lives of these animals human beings have domesticated. It is unethical to abandon dogs people once bought home as puppies. Microchipping should be mandated and money fines must be issued to those who dont conform. All stray dogs must be captured neutered and released if no home can be found. More shelters and sanctuaries should be established and supported by the local councils. Rehabilitation of any stray animal that is possible should be attempted.

Stray animals have no survival skills as they have been domesticated by humans. When left alone on the streets they face a hard life and will also harm locals, their farm animals and pets. Generally everyone will benefit from countrywide operation to handle the stray domestic animals. The strays are all over beaches and resorts. The feral ones can be dangerous to the people of the area and the tourists. When defending themselves the humans end up hurting the stray animals. Its a bad situation for all concerned. No one should be in a position where they have to defend themselves with violence! Not the animals nor the humans. We can all start to become compassionate and get together to make a start on a resolution.
