Theodore Coahran started this petition to Animal rights activists and

Tail docking is a cruel and unnecessary practice and should be banned in the US, as it is in most of the civilized world.

The practice was originally started because tax men would go to ranches and assess a tax on the working dogs... which were the dogs that had their tails. To avoid taxes people would dock the tails of their dogs. With the cases of working dogs incurring tail injuries at less than 1%, the only reason we continue to allow tail docking here in the US is strictly due to the fact that breeders think it is easier to sell pups with the cute bobbed look. The cases of tail injuries in countries that have banned the practice of docking have not risen, further supporting the fact that is a nonessential practice. Furthermore, dogs use their tails as an essential communication tool to other dogs (and people) and removing them can lead to the inability to read the dogs intentions and mood.

Join me and thousands of animal rights supporters to eliminate these cruel and unnecessary amputations in the USA, as much of the world has already accomplished. We should not allow this to continue, and should enjoy mans best friend in all he/she’s glory!
