I have worked as an animal cruelty investigator for more than 20 years. I have stood on the frontlines of cases most people would struggle even to look at.
But what happened to Angelica is among the worst I have ever seen.
A man reportedly hacked off her foot and then tried to sever the rest of her leg.
Just writing those words is difficult.
Angelica was rescued in the Philippines by a frontline rescuer supported by AWIP. She was suffering from shock, overwhelming pain and catastrophic injuries. She is now in intensive care, where veterinary teams are fighting to keep her stable and save her life.
Recently, we have seen a deeply worrying increase in serious animal cruelty cases. One emergency after another has placed enormous pressure on rescuers, veterinary teams and the limited funds available to help animals in immediate danger.
But Angelica cannot wait for things to become easier.
She needs people to stand up for her now.
After 20 years of investigating cruelty, I know what happens when cases like this are ignored. The suffering is forgotten. The person responsible moves on. And another animal may be placed at risk.
That cannot be Angelica’s story.
Most people who see what was done to her will know immediately that this demands serious consequences. I hope you will be one of the people who refuses to look away.
Angelica has already suffered more than any animal should ever endure. The very least we can do is make sure her attack is taken seriously and that the person responsible faces the strongest possible sentence if convicted.
