The recently-aired segment on 20/20 entitled "Is Your Veterinarian Being Honest With You?" was hurtful to the veterinary community and misrepresented our field. Each day we invest our hearts into our work not to bask in the profits or the glory, but to advocate for the animals who need a voice. Licensed veterinarians put time, energy and their own money into the care that they provide to their patients. Furthermore, they care about their clients and value their confidence enormously.

We believe it was irresponsible of ABC 20/20 to build a case on the confessions of one veterinarian. Furthermore, it was wrong for them to present their findings in a way that was polarizing and sensationalized. Licensed veterinarians make recommendations that are grounded in experienced, studied veterinary medicine. Many encourage their clients to ask questions and base their work off of impartial veterinary academics or better.

It's time that ABC 20/20 publicly set the record straight and clarify the veterinary community's intentions. Clients and patients matter to us. They always have and always will.
