We are 8th-grade students at Brennan middle school trying to create a law that suggests implementing background checks for individuals who want to adopt pets.

Recently, my colleagues and I became interested in raising awareness about animal cruelty, which led us to a bigger goal of solving the problem in our community. As a team, we want to prevent animal abuse by making background checks mandatory for those who wish to adopt animals in Attleboro. Studies have shown that people who mistreat animals are more likely to commit other violent crimes. By implementing background checks, we can prevent these heinous crimes from happening and protect both animals and people. 

     According to our survey conducted at Brennan Middle School, 91% of students surveyed believe that background checks should be mandatory. In addition, research shows that in the United States, more than 10,000,000 domestic animals get abused yearly.  Ever since the Coronavirus outbreak an additional 1065 animals are being abused alone every year in the United States.

By implementing these background checks, we will make our community not only safer but more humane. Sign this petition to not only help the animals but help ourselves
