Shut Down the Walnut Street Bridge During the COVID-19 Crisis
The Issue
On March 26 and March 27, while many of us were observing a Stay at Home order that has gone on for almost two weeks, crowds of people were out on the Walnut Street Bridge en masse.
This makes Social Distancing impossible as crowds bottleneck the bridge. While many may have been en route to Coolidge Park, it is easier to spread out in an open park and remain 6 feet apart from one another as the CDC and WHO recommend.
The Walnut Street Bridge is a scenic walking bridge. It is not a major thoroughfare. Those wanting to access the North Shore from downtown may take Market Street Bridge or Veteran's Bridge.
We have shut the bridge down for construction in the past. I call upon Mayor Andy Berke to do the same to protect the citizens of Chattanooga.
