My wife lost her life in 2022 floods. Now her daughter is pleading to stay in Australia
The issue
My beautiful wife, Pham Huyen Trang, tragically lost her life in the floods last October while returning home. Her little girl, Tran Kha Han, and my beloved step-daughter was only 9 when she lost her mother. We’ve only got each other left but the Department of Home Affairs has suspended her application to stay. Her mother's passing has left Han in limbo with no clear path forward.
I first met Pham and Han when I visited Vietnam in 2018. We became a family almost instantly. Pham and I got married and they both moved to Australia where we all started a new life together.
Han came to Australia through her mother's partner visa application. Now the Department says she can’t stay due to “insufficient qualifications.” Please sign my petition so Han can stay with me here.
Han has made many friends here and is at home in Australia. Pham and I had planned to have another kid together in the following year so that Han could have a sibling and our family relationship become even stronger. But that wish never came true. I have lost my beloved wife forever, but Han should be allowed to continue her life here.
Han's family in Vietnam is incapable of taking care of her. Her biological father is unwell and unemployed, with no assets. He has had to rely on relatives in Vietnam for accommodation. He never supported Pham with Han. Her grandparents are also elderly and not capable of taking care of her.
Han cries a lot and misses her mom so much. Even when she sleeps, she dream of her mum and cries. There are times when she just sits quietly in a corner. She was a lively, outgoing girl but now she avoids social situations.
Thankfully, my wife’s younger sister who is currently studying in Australia and a close family friend, Uncle Dung Van spend a lot of time with her, taking her to various outdoor places which keeps me at ease while I work. She has a good support structure here to help her overcome this major loss. I’m afraid how she will cope with another big life change if moved away from Australia.
It’s not just her family and friends who want her to stay in Australia. Every time I ask Han what she wants, she tells me she wants to stay here.
While it is difficult for Han to obtain a visa, I hope your support can convince the authorities of the need for Han to stay after losing her mum to one of the most significant natural disasters in our country’s history. Please sign and share the petition if you would like Han to stay and heal in Australia.
