Rezone storefront slaughterhouses and improve the health of New York City

The Issue

Here in the Bronx, we have the highest concentration of live animal markets in the country. Although these slaughterhouses are a staple for many immigrant communities, the day-to-day operations of these storefronts pose a variety of health risks to nearby residents and schools, these slaughterhouses have a history of escaped animals and avian flu outbreaks.

In 2008, New York State passed a bill barring new licenses for storefront slaughterhouses within 1,500 feet of a residential area. Although a step in the right direction, this law does not address the precarious sanitation practices of grandfathered establishments, like the one in our community surrounded by new housing and schools within the zoned area. We propose that these storefronts be rezoned to an appropriate market area away from schools, children, residents and the sanitation guidelines be more properly regulated and enforced.

No longer do we want to avoid puddles of blood on our sidewalks. No longer do we want our neighbors, who already struggle with asthma, to also fight back coughing fits from pungent odors. We at Youth Council (ages 13-24) believe that our community deserve to live in a safe environment, free from biohazardous materials escaping into the air and our streets.

We are not trying to stop the slaughter house industry, we too want healthy living!

Please sign our petition in support of this life changing initiative geared towards a happier and healthier NYC!
