Protect MTA New York City Transit Workers' Health

Protect MTA New York City Transit Workers' Health
The Issue
In the midst of this pandemic, MTA New York City Transit workers continue to go to work every day to keep the New York City subway system moving. Now more than fifty of these workers have contracted the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The MTA claims that if one of its workers tests positive for coronavirus, their workplace would immediately be disinfected. From personal experience, this is absolutely not the case.
Furthermore, the tight quarters of our workplace mean that social distancing is not a possibility. Twenty people together in one room right now is inherently dangerous.
Evidently, they are doing nothing to protect their workers' health. Their inaction endangers not only the health of MTA workers, but also that of their families and loved ones. During this public health crisis, the MTA's inaction is alarming and endangers the entire city.
The MTA has stated that its workers are what keep the City of New York moving, that they bring people to work and students to school every day. Now, during these troubling times, it's time to pay back the favor.
Please support the workers of MTA New York City Transit. We must continue to move essential workers around our city, but this shouldn't be to the degradation of our own health and safety, let alone that of our families.
The MTA needs to:
- disinfect workplaces immediately if a worker tests positive
- enforce social distancing measures
- distribute protective gear to workers on the frontlines
Remember, we cannot practice inaction; our actions today can make a difference tomorrow.
