Dear Reader,

My name is Mitchell Schwartz, and I am a student and activist here on Long Island, and I need your help:

With the 25th anniversary of the Long Island Rail Road massacre of 1993 right around the corner, we remember the lives lost and the heroes who stopped the shooting. Around each anniversary, wreaths are placed on the platform of the Merillon Avenue LIRR station to remember those who were killed.

Although a plaque dedicated to the victims was placed a couple of miles away in Mineola Memorial Park, I feel that a memorial should be incorporated into the design of the Merillon Avenue station when it is rebuilt during the MTA’s third-track project, as the shooting occurred while the train was approaching this station.

Therefore, I am creating this petition to erect a memorial at the station. It will be delivered to the following people and government organizations that can make this happen: the Metropolitan Transit Authority, the Village of Garden City, Nassau County and Executive Laura Curran, and Governor Andrew Cuomo, and I would be very grateful if you could sign and share this petition around our community.

This shooting was an important event that can’t be forgotten. We can only move forward in life and as a society if we remember the past and apply its lessons to create a better future.

Thanks for your support, and I truly look forward to working together and getting this accomplished!

Best,

Mitchell M. Schwartz
