Draft Mayor Andrew Gillum for Governor

Draft Mayor Andrew Gillum for Governor
The Issue
We are looking for a gubernatorial candidate that inspires and empowers people to take progressive action. Yet, every Florida election cycle, the corporate special interests and political insiders limit our choices to those with personal wealth or famous last names. Then these same power brokers wonder why people across the state feel disengaged or unmotivated to vote.
With this in mind, we believe Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is the best and boldest choice to lead Florida into a new future of opportunity and equality for all, and we encourage him to run for Governor of the State of Florida.

Mayor Gillum is the son of a construction worker and school bus driver. At the age of 23 as a student at Florida A&M University, he won a seat on the Tallahassee City Commission and has never lost a race since, winning his next four straight elections. He has been a proponent of creating jobs, while ensuring students aren’t saddled with debt after graduation. He supports the Clean Power Plan and the defeat of the Keystone Pipeline. He was the first Florida leader to call for LGBT couples to get married, when many counties across the state denied them equal rights. He was one of the only elected leaders in Florida to stand up for immigrants, when Governor Rick Scott tried to use innocent women and children as political pawns. And he is a major fighter in the struggle for commonsense gun violence prevention, by protecting our campuses and parks.
Time and time again, Mayor Gillum hasn’t needed to take a poll to stand up for people who are under attack. He has been in the arena fighting for us even when it wasn’t popular. Above all, this is the main quality we want to see in the next governor to lead our state. For the environment, for equality, for economic fairness, for justice, for new hope, we call on Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum to run for Governor in 2018.
