A parole officer was injured in an accidental, self-inflicted shooting at a Westchester County shooting range today, officials said.
The officer was at Blue Mountain Sportsman Center at 183 Watch Hill Road in Cortlandt for a firearm training class when the officer's gun accidentally fired, Thomas Mailey, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, said in a statement. DOCCS oversees parole officers.
The Westchester County police Special Response Team, which was training at Blue Mountain, responded immediately to the pistol range where the accidental shooting happened, said county police spokesman Kieran O'Leary.
The parole officer was bleeding badly from the injury, and county police Sgt. Brian Bosan used a tourniquet and administered other help to control the bleeding, O'Leary said.
County police investigated and found it was an accidental discharge of a gun.
The incident occurred before 9:10 a.m. The officer was taken to a hospital with an injury that was not life-threatening, Mailey said.
"Per protocol, the investigation into the incident is ongoing, but the department's immediate priority is the health and well-being of the officer," he said.
