Direct Support Workers Need a Living Wage!

On behalf of direct support professionals and the #bFair2DirectCare Campaign we are petitioning for the inclusion of a $45 million budget amendment to fund increases to give DSPs a living wage.
As a citizen of New York I am asking you, as our Governor, to be fair to workers who take care of other human beings every day. We are asking you to include $45million in your budget amendments to bring direct service workers’ wages up to a living-wage standard. We are simply asking that you consider the value of our work to be at least equivalent to the value of fast food workers. We applaud your efforts to provide living wages by raising the minimum wage for fast food workers to $15 an hour. We just want to make sure that you don’t leave us – the people who take responsibility for the lives and well-being of some of the most vulnerable New Yorkers – behind.
Funding is critical to the health, safety and well-being of people with developmental disabilities and it’s the right thing to do for the people who work tirelessly caring for them.
Direct Support Professionals have jobs that require extensive and ongoing training in order to provide quality care. The jobs are difficult and demanding and both physically and emotionally taxing. We love our work and the people we support – but far too many of us are forced to leave the field just to make a living that allows us to support ourselves and our families. Many of us have second or third jobs just to make ends meet.
Governor Cuomo we ask you to be our hero. Please do not forget us – the people who work to support individuals with disabilities. We deserve a living wage – and the people we support deserve our very best. We treat them with great care and respect – we ask you to treat us in the same way.
