Cut both Energy Bills and Fossil Fuel Pollution by Signing Geothermal Heat Pump Incentive Laws (S2905, S4279)

The Issue

To Lower Energy Bills for New Yorkers: High heating bills are a serious problem for many New Yorkers.  Geothermal heat pumps eliminate fossil fuel use for heating, and insulate us from the erratic cost swings of those fuels.

To Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Burning oil, propane and gas to heat buildings is an even greater source of greenhouse gas emissions in our state than generating electricity.  Geothermal Heat Pumps (GHPs) use the renewable solar energy stored in the ground to heat and cool without producing greenhouse gases on site.

To Reduce Peak Demand on the Hottest Days: Geothermal heat pumps reverse in warm weather and are far more efficient than conventional air conditioners.  Oak Ridge National Lab forecasts significant cuts in expensive peak load with strong market penetration of GHPs.

There is a way: The Legislature recognized GHPs as a solution to these problems when it passed A2177a/S2905 – ((geothermal heat pump (GHP) tax credit)) and A-5508/S4279 (GHP sales tax exemption) this year.

Parity with Solar to Create Jobs: These bills give GHPs the same tax treatment that has created thousands of jobs in the solar PV industry.

Governor, to help keep New York’s clean energy momentum on track, please sign these bills.
