We, the undersigned, call on WHO to terminate its business relationship with Eden Springs. For the sake of transparency and accountability, we also call for WHO to issue a public statement on this issue.
In 2012 the World Health Organization contracted with Eden Springs Water to provide bottled water for its annual World Health Assembly event. Taking place in the WHO headquarters in Geneva, this week-long Assembly is attended by delegations from all WHO Member States.
Eden Springs Water is an Israeli corporation. Eden’s original factory remains in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, where it derives its very product (for its domestic market) from the expropriated Salukia Springs. UN resolutions have consistently condemned Israel for exploiting the natural resources of the illegally occupied Golan Heights, recently A/70/480 (1 December 2015).
While Eden does source from European springs for its European markets, Eden’s core website makes clear that its European business is merely an expansion of its Israeli success. The Bloomberg Business snapshot of Eden confirms that the company’s corporate headquarters is in Bnei Brak, Israel, and that it does business internationally.
Particularly as an agency of the UN, WHO should not be contracting with a corporation built on violations that the UN has consistently denounced for nearly 50 years. UN Security Council Resolution S/RES/497(1981) (17 December 1981) unanimously invalidated Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights. Specifically due to Israel’s failure to comply with 497, UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/37/123 (16 December 1982) calls in part for Member States “to suspend economic, financial and technological assistance to and co-operation with Israel,” and “to sever diplomatic, trade and cultural relations with Israel.” The Resolution also “calls upon the specialized agencies and other international organizations to conform their relations with Israel to the terms of the present resolution.”
Even if the water delivered to WHO in Geneva is from European springs, that water is delivered ultimately by an Israeli corporation. That water is fruit from the poison tree. The time for boycott of Eden Springs is now. Every purchase of Eden Water normalizes an illegal settlement and exploits the most precious natural resource that lawfully belongs to the Syrians. We, the undersigned, call on WHO to terminate its business relationship with Eden Springs. For the sake of transparency and accountability, we call for WHO to issue a public statement on this issue.
