We, the undersigned New Mexicans, call on Representative Andrea Romero to resign immediately from the New Mexico House of Representatives.

Serious questions have been raised about Representative Romero’s employment with the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office while she was serving as a state legislator. Those questions include whether the arrangement complied with Article IV, Section 28 of the New Mexico Constitution and applicable state law, whether public funds were used appropriately, what duties she performed, when that work occurred and whether her legislative position created a conflict of interest.

These are not minor administrative questions. They involve public money, the separation of government responsibilities and the public’s ability to trust its elected officials.

New Mexicans should not have to force basic answers from public officials. The people deserve complete disclosure of employment records, payroll records, work hours, job duties, contracts and any conflict disclosures related to this arrangement. They also deserve an independent review by the appropriate state authorities.

Representative Romero’s continued service while these questions remain unresolved has damaged public confidence in the New Mexico Legislature. Elected officials must be held to a higher standard. If a legislator cannot provide a clear and credible explanation for a potential conflict involving public employment, that legislator should no longer hold public office.

Therefore, we demand that:

Representative Andrea Romero resign immediately from the New Mexico House of Representatives.

The New Mexico House leadership preserve and release all public records related to Representative Romero’s employment with the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office, consistent with New Mexico law.

The Attorney General and other appropriate authorities conduct an independent review of the employment arrangement, compensation, work performed and potential conflicts of interest.

Any possible violations of the New Mexico Constitution, state law or public ethics requirements be referred to the appropriate authorities.

By signing this petition, we affirm that public office is a public trust. We believe New Mexicans deserve transparency, accountability and elected officials who place the integrity of government above personal or political interests.
