The Conejo Valley Unified School District School Board previously agreed that the teachers and administrators would work with Board Members and parents on a policy for a parent or student to request an alternative core literature assignment when materials conflict with parent or student values.
Instead the newest Board Member presented a policy amendment to 6161.1 Selection and Evaluation of Instructional Materials with 7 additional pages of regulations to red flag or eliminate Literature selections for High School students.
This policy is too extreme and discounts the judgement, quality and experience of our teachers We will lose great teachers if they lose freedom in the classroom to meet the needs of their students.
We will lose students to other Districts that allow professional education to flourish without micro management by the citizen oversight of the Board. Conscientious parents are well aware of their students' course content and are fully capable of reviewing literature and contacting the teacher or principal to express any concerns.
Property Values will suffer if educational excellence is comprised. The number one reason parents move to our area is the quality of the schools. Compromising curriculum for ideological concerns will hurt our schools.
Employers will not move to an area with a troubled School Board that spends too much time pushing an ideological agenda, rather than ensuring quality education for our students.
We oppose this amendment and want the Board to withdraw or oppose the BP 6161.1 Policy Amendment. The Board should work with the teachers and administrators and parents as agreed on a policy for a parent or student to request an alternative core literature assignment when materials conflict with parent or student values.
