Stop Chick-Fil-A From Coming to Van Ness

Chick-Fil-A has applied for a permit to replace the Burger King on Connecticut Avenue, just north of the Van Ness Metro station. This organization is not a good fit for the community for several reasons.
The residents of Van Ness should demand healthy dining options over more corporate fast food. Chick-Fil-A offers unhealthy fare that families should be wary of.
The plan for our community should be to focus on local, small businesses and a pedestrian-friendly, transit-oriented retail corridor. Chick-Fil-A would accomplish none of this. They are a corporate fast-food behemoth, and their proposed drive-thru would increase emissions, noise and traffic congestion. As a result, nearby small, independent businesses such as Bread Furst may be forced to vacate if patrons find accessibility difficult and traffic noise and exhaust fumes unsuitable for sipping coffee al fresco. All you are left with is a corporate takeover of the neighborhood.
Moreover, the business practices of Chick-Fil-A are deplorable. This is a company that is very outspoken in their opposition to marriage equality, and they donate millions of dollars to anti-gay organizations. There have been examples of employees who come out as gay only to then be informed that they will not be able to advance within the company. This is blatant discrimination, and should not be tolerated in a city known for tolerance, diversity and inclusion.
Chick-Fil-A insists that all of their locations close on Sunday. This practice does not in turn create vibrant retail corridors, and is anathema to what the vision for the community should be.
This petition urges the members of the ANC 3F Neighborhood Committe to vote to reject the Chick-Fil-A permit application and keep the focus on building a walkable community that encourages small, local, independent businesses to thrive.
