AUHSD Food Services follow the school meal regulations of the California Department of Education - who has voiced their support for the inclusion of more plant-based options available within their meal plan. AUHSD has so far implemented few plant-based options; however, as the plant based community extends into a younger demographic and as the health risks of animal based foods are being uncovered we are hoping to see further implementation of plant based meals. As for the lunch plan for the month of April 2019, only one out of 13 daily options is vegan, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, which although calorie dense, lacks in nutrient density. Four options are vegetarian, yet none of the daily varieties are plant-based. Many children rely on school lunches as part of their daily diet, and we believe it is important to make healthy options available to all groups in society. Sign this petition to encourage the school district to take this step into improving the nutrition and performance of all AUHSD students.
