The Issue

The campus animals of UP Diliman need our help!

A couple of days ago, there have been sights of a Quezon City pound catching stray dogs near Area 2 and around the campus oval. Many of these stray dogs are actually owned. Most of them are also harmless. At the same time, they serve as stress-busters for the students and employees--who are currently worried about how the animals are feeling in the congested spaces of the pound right now.

For 8 years or so, the UP Diliman Administration stopped resorting to impounding because not only is it useless, but it is also harmful. However, one of our worst fears of the method returning have been confirmed.

In 2 weeks or in a month, there will be new dogs and cats that will replace the ones which were taken by the pound, and the whole cycle of feline and canine pregnancy starts again. The solutions for this concern are MASS KAPON within the university and residential areas, regulation of the number of animals in each household, adoption, and training programs. These methods prove to be the humane way of handling animals within a university--and not resorting to impounding wherein they subject the animals to euthanasia (mercy killing), if not adopted for a certain period of time.

Now is the time to act, so let's save UPD's campus animals by signing this petition to appeal to the UP admin and officials (university-wide and barangay) to stop the process and release the impounded dogs!
