Just another quick update today, and I'll leave you alone for a while....
Over the last 7 days we've recorded yet another two dogs at a young wombat's burrow. The same burrow that had a kelpie INSIDE on August 16th.
If this is a greyhound we've recorded, the dog owner is also breaching state government legislation requiring greyhounds to always be leashed, even in designated off-leash areas. We've recorded other greyhounds at this burrow on previous occasions. Whether we agree with these regulations or not, they are in place for good reason and should be followed.
Nonetheless, this burrow is hidden in the vegetation and has a 'Conservation Area' (CA) sign nearby, in addition to two more CA signs on the beach and the permanent signs stating the rules at beach entrances.
Some dog walkers just won't comply, and are ruining it for those kind dog walkers who always do the right thing - if they can do the right thing, everyone can.
These dogs owners, who are breaching the council by-laws, are also placing the wombats welfare and their own dogs at risk.
So we'll have to continue to feedback to the council (at the expense of our personal time and energy), call for action and gather more support for this issue.
*And just a quick correction from my (very tired and long) update a few days ago.
The dates were correct, but it was 6 months waiting for the council to install 'Conservation Area' signs, and not 8 months, as I wrote. Facts always matter, therefore, I think it's important to correct my typo.
Still, it's far too long to have the wombats wait after we identified and communicated this problem to the council. The dogs would have been visiting active burrows for years. And as you know, unfortunately, the new signs aren't working either.
We'll keep monitoring the San Remo wombats, treat them for mange, and advocate for their protection. We hope to enact some positive change in the process.
Thanks again,
Eve Kelly
