An Open Letter to Lady Gaga on the Human Rights of Palestinians.
The Issue
Dear Lady Gaga,
Your history of activism for important causes has never gone unnoticed. In your song "Born this Way" and throughout your career, you campaigned for the rights of LGBTQ+ people in the face of a hostile media. During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, your leadership skills in organising the 'One World: Together at Home' concert brought resources and attention to urgent humanitarian issues. We need your strength once again.
Many of us are outraged by the apparent genocide of the Palestinian people, with (at time of writing) 40,000 innocent civillians being killed by Israeli bombardment, including over 12,500 children. The Israeli offensive in Rafah has fragmented all illusions of the war being anything but a bloodbath. A refugee camp in a so-called 'humanitarian zone' was bombed, leading to over 45 deaths in the subsequent fires. The published list of deaths of civillians in Gaza takes hours to read in full and many of the names simply read 'Son of..." or "Daughter of..." as the babies slaughtered were too young to even be given names.
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Occupied Palestine has stated that there is reasonable grounds to believe a genocide is being committed, and the International Court of Justice has ordered an Israeli halt to the Rafah offensive as the Palestinians have the right to protection from genocide.
The Palestinians are being deprived of all basic necessities. Water, food and medical supplies are restricted by the Israeli government to the point of 'humanitarian crisis', with over a third facing catastrophic hunger because of Israel. The only operational hospital was bombed was bombed on the 28th of May and so many are just being left to die of hunger, infection, injury and thirst.
We understand that this is a difficult position to take a stance on, but with the power you hold both as someone associated with the President of the USA and as an incredibly famous celebrity, your voice is instrumental as a way to create real lasting change in Occupied Palestine. You have never been scared to tell truth to power, and this is an incredibly important opportunity to share your voice.
Love from,
