Hi Cash Lovers,
Official data reveals how Australians are resisting the cashless society agenda.
The number of cash withdrawals continues to hold up, despite bank branch and ATM closures, more restrictions on EFTPOS cash-outs and increased questioning of account holders who want to withdraw cash.
The total number of cash withdrawals made in Australia rose in August to 37.2 million, reported the Reserve Bank this week, from 37.1 million in July.
The vast majority of cash withdrawals are made at ATMs. The number of ATM cash withdrawals rose in August to almost 28.5 million from 28.2 million in July.
The second most popular way to access cash is via EFTPOS cash-outs, which also rose in August to 7.2 million from 7.1 million in July, despite harsh restrictions on cash-outs by Coles, Woolworths and IGA.
The continuing demand for cash is reflected in the sheer mountain of Australian cash now circulating in the community.
Last week, the RBA issued $448 million of new banknotes to take the total value of cash notes circulating in Australia to $105.351 billion. This is the first time the total value of Australian cash banknotes on issue has exceeded $105 billion.
That's more than $3,818 worth of cash for every single person in Australia.
All these numbers prove Australians still want to use cash - if we can get hold of cash.
Banks, retailers and the RBA need to ensure cash remains legal tender accepted throughout Australia.
