Bendigo Bank has recently closed ten branches, five in rural communities that have been left with no bank branch at all.
Bendigo Bank has NOT claimed these branches are empty. The mayor of Wellington Shire in Victoria says all the Bendigo branches in his area were busy everyday.
Bendigo Bank has RULED OUT converting these closed branches to community banks with investment from local customers.
Golden Plains Shire mayor Cr Owen Sharkey said: “That has been ruled out by the Bendigo Bank…at this stage, but it’s something that they [indicated they] would look at into the future,” Cr Sharkey said.
“It didn’t sound very promising at all.”
Cr Sharkey said the bank had indicated that residents would have to commit to doing their banking with the community bank, rather than through it.
“You just wish that those conversations could have been had six months ago.”
Bendigo Bank say customers can go online or travel to other branches to do their banking, so this is clearly and obviously a cost-shifting exercise. Customers who can will travel further to do their banking, saving Bendigo the cost of supporting branches in every community.
Every town or suburb needs at least one bank branch.
Banks can't keep shifting all their costs onto their customers and pocketing the huge profits.
