Hi Cash Lovers,

Ian Williams from Bendigo in Victoria had $1,338 taken from his NAB account by scammers using Google Pay at a Coles supermarket hundreds of kilometres from his home.

NAB at first blamed Ian for the loss and accused him of spending the $1,338 himself.

NAB later offered to repay the $1338, then upped the offer to $1500, but the associated non-disclosure agreement and no admission of responsibility led Ian to reject the offer.

"This sort of injustice, where common people are being trampled … it's just getting worse and worse, I'm a stubborn old turd and I will not give up," Ian Williams told ABC's Background Briefing.

Ian Williams went to court alleging NAB failed to secure his banking credentials and transaction data and breached its duty to protect their own customers.

Ian Williams says $1,338.00 is 5.5% of his annual pension so he is asking NAB to pay 5.5% of their annual profit in exemplary damages - $379 million.

Australia's National Anti-Scam Centre reports there were 494,732 scam reports last year and $2.03 billion lost. Around $11 billion has been lost to scammers from Australian bank accounts over the last five years.

Last week, hackers stole the personal information of 5.7 million Qantas customers. The FBI said organised online crime group Scattered Spider is “expanding its targeting to include the airline sector”.

Payment redirection and Remote access to bank accounts are among the largest scam types by losses in Australia.

Cash is our last line of defence in the war on privacy.

Without cash we can't spend our money privately without giving up personal information.

The RBA reported in 2023 that privacy and security concerns are the leading reasons why Australians use cash.

The RBA researchers suggested that this is ‘perhaps reflecting high-profile cyber incidents in the past few years.’

Please help me keep fighting against their cashless society.
