Hi Cash Lovers,
The Albanese government is refusing to make submissions to the Mandating Cash Acceptance consultation public.
Months ago, staff from Commonwealth Department of the Treasury asked submitters for permission to publish their submissions yet still they have not been made public and questions about the delay have yet to receive a reply.
The proposed cash mandate (due to begin on 1st January 2026) will apply to physical retailers selling essential goods and services such as food, medicine and fuel.
However the proposal has struck criticism around the definition of essentials and the possibility it will allow 97% of retailers to go cashless.
" ... the proposed legislation in its current form has the potential to cause more harm than good, accelerating the decline in cash acceptance by giving almost all businesses in Australia an easy out as they face the challenges of managing cash as cash “access” is allowed to fall away." wrote financial journalist Dale Webster.
Perhaps the truth is that the Mandating Cash Acceptance consultation has received thousands of submissions complaining about the government's proposal and concerned that most retailers could soon be cashless.
With less than six months to go until the cash mandate takes effect, now is the time for real consultation and the development of a meaningful cash mandate.
Please help me keep fighting against their cashless society.
