Investigate & Reform the Minneapolis and Other Police Departments Across the United States
The Issue
Our hearts are broken. We are angry, sad, and disappointed, yet more determined than ever before. Our people are hurting. Our cities are boarded up and on fire. At times during all of this chaos, the police are nowhere in sight.
Yet another senseless police killing of a Black man in Minnesota. This time - George Floyd. Before him, Jamar Clark and Philando Castile. Plus, an unarmed white woman - Justine Ruszczyk - who called the police seeking help and protection, yet wound up being shot and killed by a policeman. On top of all of the killings in Minnesota, add in the senseless killing others around the United States including, but not limited to, Rodney King, Malice Wayne Green, Abner Louima, Amadou Diallo, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor.
All of the senseless police killings that occurred in Minnesota happened within less than five years. Yet, nothing has changed.
To make matters worse, it is not as if we do not know why these killings keep on happening. We do know, and we have known for a long, long time. There are deep-rooted problems within the Minneapolis Police Department and other police departments across the United States. The reason the killings keep on occurring is nobody has been willing to do anything of substance to tackle the difficult changes that must be made.
WE WILL NOT STANDBY QUITELY ANYMORE.
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, HEREBY DEMAND that United States Senator Amy Klobuchar, United States Senator Tina Smith, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, the Minneapolis City Council, and Minneapolis Chief of Police Medaria Arradondo immediately commence an investigation to evaluate the unconstitutional patterns and practices of violent policing targeting communities of color in the Minneapolis Police Department that contributed to the tragic and unjust deaths of Geroge Floyd, Justine Ruszcyk, Philando Castile, and Jamar Clark.
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, HEREBY FURTHER DEMAND that the United States Congress immediately commence an investigation to evaluate the unconstitutional patterns and practices of violent policing targeting communities of color across the United States that contributed to the tragic and unjust deaths of Rodney King, Malice Wayne Green, Abner Louima, Amadou Diallo, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and every other person of color that was tragically and unjustifiably killed at the hands of police officers.
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, HEREBY FURTHER DEMAND that changes be made immediately within the Minneapolis Police Department and other police departments throughout the United States to ensure that any and all unconstitutional patterns and practices of violent policing targeting communities of color in the Minneapolis Police Department and every other police department throughout the United States be fully eradicated, including, but not limited to, any and all "killology," "Bullet Proof Warrior," and any other types of "warrior style" training.
If there was ever a time that we need strong and committed leadership to bring about justice and make long-overdue changes, that time is most certainly now.
WE HEREBY DEMAND THAT YOU ANSWER THIS CALL TO ACTION NOW.
