I am creating this petition due to the fact that more awareness needs to be brought to this issue, so that there can be changes made to the law to stop this from occuring. A legal loophole exists that allows non-natives to commit crimes, including sexual assault and rape on Native American women. More than 1 in 2 experience sexual assault, at a rate 10x higher than the National Average, and murdered at MORE than 10x the national rate. 80% of sexual assault on Native women is committed by non-natives. Non-Natives cannot be tried by Tribal Courts legally. The Federal Government and US attorneys has the ability to prosecute, but declines to 78% of the time. This U.S law creates a discriminatory system of justice in Native communities-a system that allows criminals to act without impunity on Reservations. It threatens the lives and violates the human rights of Native American women DAILY. This is a jurisdictional black hole that must be dealt with now, and should have been amended ages ago. We MUST raise our voices in unison to fight against this immense injustice that has been occuring far too long. We must stand up for our fellow Native American women's rights to LIVE without fear of constant abuse. The organizations listed with this petition are all working to stop this from happening.
